IGNITION AUTO PARTS

IGNITION AUTO PARTS

Your vehicle’s ignition system performs a critical task by taking electricity from your battery, converting that power to a very high voltage and then transferring this voltage to your spark plugs in a controlled manner. It is the sequenced firing of the spark plugs that ignites fuel inside your engine. Breakdowns in any part of this complex system can significantly reduce your vehicle’s performance, or even leave you stranded by the side of the road.

At Hub Auto, we carry everything you need to replace the ignition system components in any foreign or domestic vehicle. Our extensive inventory includes OEM factory parts that meet all manufacturer specifications. It also includes aftermarket parts from the industry’s most trusted manufacturers and even hard-to-find ignition components for your rare or classic vehicle. Professional mechanics will benefit from our unparalleled component selection, as well as our dependable hot-shot delivery system.

Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs are screwed directly into your engine’s combustion chambers. They have several operating parts, including a terminal that connects to the ignition wire, a central electrode that takes voltage from the terminal, and a tip with two precisely spaced electrodes.

When spark plugs receive voltage from the rotor, this voltage passes through the body of each plug and “sparks” in the gap between the two electrodes. It is this sparking action that ignites the fuel/air mixture in the engine and sets the pistons in motion. A faulty spark plug will inevitably result in poor engine performance. Count on Hub Auto to carry the spark plugs you need for your vehicle.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • You have problems starting your vehicle.
  • Your vehicle accelerates slower than usual.
  • Your engine misfires instead of running smoothly.

Caps & Rotors

The distributor cap performs an important job by separating the interior of the distributor from the engine compartment. It also houses the connection points for the incoming lead from the coil, as well as the outgoing spark plug wires. The rotor turns on the distributor’s central shaft.

As it makes this turning motion, it takes the high voltage from the coil and routes it to each of the spark plug wires in a sequenced order. Hub Auto carries a complete selection of caps and rotors, and we’re happy to advise you on the products that work best with your vehicle’s ignition system.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • Your Check Engine light comes on.
  • Your engine misfires instead of running smoothly.
  • Your vehicle won’t start when you turn the key in the ignition.

Ignition Wire Sets

Ignition wires are also known as ignition cables and spark plug wires. They run from the distributor cap to each individual spark plug terminal. Voltage from the rotor passes through these wires on its way to your engine’s combustion chambers. As they age, ignition wires can degrade and lose some of their conducting power.

Problems start when they disrupt the ability of spark plugs to ignite the engine’s fuel/air mixture. It’s important to note that issues with ignition wires can begin in other parts of the ignition system. In addition, you should always check the condition of your spark plugs when you replace these wires.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • Your Check Engine light comes on.
  • You notice signs of damage or wear.
  • You notice a decrease in engine power or acceleration.

Distributors

The distributor is basically a metal bowl that sits on a central shaft. This shaft is connected to the engine’s crankshaft and rotates at half the engine’s speed. The bowl of the distributor houses your ignition system’s rotor, and the distributor cap sits on top. Turn to Hub Auto for timely advice on replacing your distributor, and for an excellent selection of products to choose from.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • Your Check Engine light comes on.
  • Your engine misfires instead of running smoothly.
  • You notice strange or unusually loud sounds coming from under the hood.

Coils

A coil is a cylindrical metal casing that houses an iron core wrapped with insulated wires. A low-tension current from the battery enters one side of the ignition coil. When required for the operation of your vehicle, it turns this low-tension current into a much more powerful high-tension current, which flows to the distributor. Instead of relying on one coil, many modern vehicles have separate coils for each cylinder of the engine. Check with the experts at Hub Auto when you replace your coils. We offer an excellent selection and a wealth of advice.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • Your vehicle won't start.
  • Your Check Engine light comes on.
  • Your engine idles roughly, misfires, or experiences a loss of power.

Direct Ignition Coils

Not all modern engines rely on ignition systems based on a high-voltage coil and distributor. Instead, they use a primary electronic circuit for voltage distribution and individual ignition coils for each engine cylinder. Direct ignition coils get their name because they sit very close to their associated spark plugs, or directly on top of them. This setup minimizes the need to transmit high-voltage current inside the ignition system. At Hub Auto, we carry a wide array of direct ignition coils and would love to help you find an item that is ideal for your current repair project.

Primary Replacement Indicators:

  • Your vehicle won't start.
  • Your Check Engine light comes on.
  • Your engine idles roughly, misfires, or experiences a loss of power.
